Tunde Adebimpe has shared the fourth single, “Somebody New”, off his just released album “Thee Black Boltz” out now via Sub Pop.
The for the song was directed by Tunde himself. He shared this about the video: “I’m positive I fell asleep on a couch with the TV on sometime in 1982 and fever dreamt this exact thing.”
Hace unos días tuvimos la buena fortuna de hacerle unas preguntas a Vaya Futuro, más específicamente, pudimos hablar con Luis Aguilar y esto fue lo que nos quiso compartir.
– Qué le pasó a Vaya Futuro? Cambio? Evolucionó? Fue mutación?
Creo que pasaron varias cosas. Desde que nos mudamos a la Ciudad de México inició un cambio y una separación de nuestra ciudad natal. El último empujón fue el aislamiento de la pandemia, a la par de terminar de mezclar y lanzar nuestro disco de 2020, nos hizo ignorar muchos de los lineamientos que aprendimos creciendo en la escena “indie” tijuanense, lo cual nos hizo re-conectar con nuestras primeras influencias. Con “lineamientos” me refiero a lo que socialmente aprendes como aceptable y no aceptable, estéticamente de buen gusto y de mal gusto. Crecimos en una escena muy cerrada y burlona, que por lo mismo limita mucho la creatividad si es que te importa pertenecer y lo que opinan de tu trabajo, lo cual antes sí nos importaba, evidentemente ya no. Eso es lo que cambió.
– Qué los mantiene motivados en estos tiempos con esta turbulencia que les tocó?
Me mantiene motivado escribir de manera brutalmente honesta acorde a mi perspectiva, sin importar si es bien recibido o no. Mejorar siempre lo que no te gustó de tu disco anterior en cuanto a producción, eso siempre nos motiva. Siempre escuchamos cosas que haríamos distinto o que sentimos que no logramos ejecutar idealmente. Pero en parte eso es lo que nos gusta de los discos, que capturan una esencia muy única del momento.
– En donde encuentran inspiración?
En el primer disco, el simple hecho de documentar que alguna vez existimos. En el segundo disco la exploración y crecimiento no solo como banda pero como productores, disfrutar del hecho de que pensábamos que solo tendríamos un disco y que logramos hacer otro. En el tercer disco ya vivíamos en la Ciudad de México y estábamos desnutridos y viviendo aplastados en un cuarto de hotel. Nos inspiró rendir tributo a la música que nos brindó momentos de felicidad en esa temporada incierta de nuestras vidas, aunado a la psicodelia y la idea de hacer un disco más ambicioso. Ya había algunos destellos de temática social y ecológica.
A partir de nuestro cuarto disco “El Peso Del Mundo”, me empezó a inspirar más hablar sobre injusticia social, catástrofe ambiental y mucho más surrealismo y esoterismo. El disco nuevo “Fuego, Guíame” es eso pero en versión enojada. El enojo fue la inspiración para este nuevo disco. Alzar la voz frente a genocidios, desplazamientos, control mediático. Aceptar que heridas personales no sanan del todo y escribir sobre ello. Básicamente no ignorar las realidades dolorosas de este mundo. Elegir la incomodidad sobre lo “aesthetic”.
– Cómo llega Vaya Futuro al sonido que tiene hoy?
Creo que a raíz de que hicimos un segundo disco que resultó bastante diferente al primero, nos hicimos a la idea de que esa era la manera en que nos llena el proyecto. Al mismo tiempo en que exploramos y vamos mutando, puedes escuchar en toda la discografía pequeños momentos de lo que ha formado la identidad de la banda (y lo que no). Por ejemplo, en nuestro EP del 2016 “El Hombre Sin Cabeza y La Danza De Los Resignados”, escuchas que está más a la par del Vaya Futuro actual de lo que estaba en ese momento. En su momento desconcertó a la gente.
Con “Fuego, Guíame” aunque entregamos un disco con influencias de Sludge, Post-Metal y metal alternativo, tampoco sentimos que hicimos un disco 100% de Metal. Creo que se escucha aún que somos nosotros, tampoco entregamos un disco que podría ser de Slayer o de Eyehategod ¿sabes? Por esta razón no creo que somos una banda de metal ni creemos que nos aceptarían en dicha escena. Sentimos que somos una banda de rock alternativo pero coquetea al mismo tiempo con otros géneros, mucho más de lo usual. Creo que esa personalidad siempre la hemos tenido. Cuando nos quisieron encasillar en el shoegaze al inicio, salimos huyendo de esa etiqueta. Siempre hacemos lo que queremos porque al fin de cuentas es nuestro proyecto, entonces fácilmente el siguiente disco hipotéticamente podría ser un disco 100% de shoegaze, y no tendríamos porqué justificarlo.
– Hay bandas en México que ustedes consideren contemporáneos o que estén en el mismo plano musical que ustedes?
Honestamente creo que no, por el simple hecho de que cuando escucho bandas con varios materiales, siento que fuera de diferencias de producción, todo suena mas o menos igual. Creo que las bandas independientes generalmente tienen un sonido muy definido y lo mantienen, lo cual es inteligente porque en nuestro caso, que ha sido todo lo contrario, creo que ha sido un arma de doble filo y parte de la razón por la que nos ha costado retener público y crecer como banda. Al mismo tiempo, creo que es la razón por la cuál se nos respeta. Personalmente prefiero dejar un historial interesante.
Otra cosa que nos distingue del resto creo que es la falta de relaciones públicas que hacemos. Nunca estamos tratando de quedar bien con las personas de los festivales, ni estamos buscando favores de nadie. Por ejemplo, ahora que acaba de suceder la trágica y prevenible muerte de Berenice Giles y Miguel Ángel López en Axe Ceremonia, no veo a casi ningún acto nacional denunciando la negligencia por parte del festival. Ni siquiera los proyectos que tocaron o iban a tocar el día siguiente. Ni siquiera las bandas más underground. Esa tibieza por parte de las escenas locales yo no la comparto. No me importa si por eso nos “bloquean” y no nos invitan a sus siguientes eventos. No nos invitaban de todas maneras, por lo que no tenemos nada que perder.
Denuncio esa tibieza en la escena musical local. Parece que a todo mundo le da miedo “quedar mal”. Francamente es decepcionante y agotador.

– Existe el hubiera?
En esta banda creo que sí existe de alguna manera. Nosotros vivimos eso con cada disco. No nos detenemos cuando un disco no suena exactamente como teníamos en mente. Aceptamos que ese es nuestro límite actual, y lo publicamos. Por eso tenemos 5 discos. Y nuestro “hubiera” es que cuando no nos gustó algún aspecto de lo que ya publicamos, lo tratamos de mejorar y lograr en el que sigue.
PD. Hay algún libro y/o disco y/o película que puedan recomendar?
Películas, recomiendo “Sin Señas Particulares” de Fernanda Valadez, “Come And See” de Elem Klímov y “Possession” y “On The Silver Globe” ambas de Andrzej Zulawski.
Libro puedo recomendar “Nuestra Parte de Noche” de Mariana Enriquez y “El Grito Silencioso” de Kenzaburō Ōe.

Matt Berninger has shared the second single, “Breaking Into Acting”, off his upcoming second album “Get Sunk” out May 30th via Book/Concord.
The video for the song was directed by Hooper Mills and it stars Berninger and Meg Duffy (Hand Habits), since the song served as a duet of sorts featuring Hand Habits.
Matt Berninger will be on tour starting in May supporting the album in select cities around the USofA (no Tijuana on this tour yet), before heading to Europe at the end of August into September.
Doves have shared a new release, a 10″ Record Store Day double A side single. “Lean Into The Wind” b/w “Cally”.
Jimi Goodwin shared this about the song: “It’s all there in the lyrics, it’s about addiction. It’s drawn from a situation I was in at the time and, although I am inspired more by making songs about characters, this literally happened to me. Going to someone’s house, trying something and it consuming you within days. I am not ashamed of it; it’s a story of what can happen and it’s not uncommon. It happens to people every day, hopefully it’s a cautionary tale.”
Andy Williams added this: “Jimi took the song away and came back with the first verse. There was just instant recognition that it was about some of the stuff he must have been going through. Ultimately, it had real authenticity to it, just like everything he does. In writing the second verse, all I could do was imagine what he’d been through and what he’d been feeling. Hopefully it’s a song that resonates.”
Both new songs were also recorded during the sessions for the album. The band wrote, recorded, and produced the album in Greater Manchester, North Wales, and Cheshire. Long-term collaborator Dan Austin contributed additional production.
