i think i better follow you around

Alfredo & Edeath, are a couple of music lovers who met later in life but grew up loving almost the same bands and hating others but always listening to music, old and new, and apart from collecting vinyl and books and going to see every good band coming to town, (or a few miles away), got together and created "I think i better follow you around", a website/music blog, where they share all the music they like and help promote upcoming concerts, local bands from San Diego and Tijuana and amazing artists from around the world. I think I better follow you around is an independent project.

John Maus at the Soda Bar.

By: Alfredo Tellez / Edith Morales

John Maus came to the Soda Bar on October 12th, 2017 in support of his latest album “Screen Memories ” to play to a sold out show.

Here is a gallery from the show.

The setlist was this:

Castles In the Grave / Quantum Leaps / Rights For Gays / …And The Rain / Streetlight / Time To Die / The Crucifix / Touchdown / Maniac / Cop Killer / Pets

ENCORE

Do Your Best / Believer.

He will be returning to San Diego to play the Belly Up on January 29th. His show is not to be missed.

The National at Cal Coast Credit Union

By: Alfredo Tellez / Edith Morales

The National played the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at SDSU on October 12th in support of their latest album “Sleep Well Beast” out now on 4ad.

It was their first visit to San Diego since they played Street Scene in ’08 and the Casbah in ’07 with St. Vincent.

Trying to write about the National live has its difficulties. Those are due to the fact that you can only try and pay attention to one member of the band at a time. The Dessner twins are just amazing at the guitars and layers of noise that they produce at each show. The Davendorf brothers, Scott at bass and Bryan’s impeccable drumming, are worth the price of admission alone.

Which now brings us to Matt Berninger. There’s something about the lyrics and the self depricating humour behind them, about the seriousness about them, about the goofiness in them. And then you have the delivery and voice which makes you (me) feel.

Here’s the setlist:

Nobody Else Will Be There / The System Only Sleeps In Total Darkness / Walk It Back / Guilty Party / Don’t Swallow The Cap / Afraid Of Everyone / Bloodbuzz Ohio / Dark Side Of The Gym / I’ll Still Destroy You / Turtleneck / I Need My Girl / This Is The Last Time / Wasp Nest / Conversation 16 / Apartment Story / Carin At The Liquor Store / Day I Die / Fake Empire

ENCORE

Start A War / Lemonworld / Mr. November / Terrible Love.

And for a second there it almost looked like they were going to play “Lose yourself”, well maybe not even if they teased the intro. But either way at the end of the show the PA played the song and Matt came out to “dance” or rap or sing, but mostly to just parade the stage and say hivto the fans while the song played.

Here’s to hoping that it doesn’t take 10 years and/or 3 albums for the band to come back.

Edit; The National played the Spreckels Theatre back on May 23rd 2010. It still took them too damn long to come back to San Diego.

Zola Jesus at the Casbah

Zola Jesus played the Casbah on September 21st in support of her latest album “Okovi” out on Sacred Bones Records.

Here’s a gallery from that show.

Here’s the setlist from that great intimate show:

Veka / Soak / Dangerous Days / Siphon / Witness / Wiseblood / Hikikomori / Night / Vessel / Exhumed.

Love Theme live at Space Bar

Love Theme played Space Bar on 9/26. Who is Love Theme? It’s Alex Zhang Hungtai (of the now defunct projects Dirty Beaches and Last Lizard), along with Austin Milne, and Simon Frank, ‘Love Theme’ is arranged from an improvised session with twin saxophones, synthesizer, percussion, drum machine, and voice.

Being able to hear the self titled album played live is an experience. I’ll do my best to try and do it justice with an explanation of sorts.

It’s a narrative versed in lament. It’s a forgotten memory being rearranged before your very eyes. It’s the meeting or re-encounter of lost souls in a different time and place. All these feeling and emotions were transmitted at the show.

The only organic instruments were the saxophones and yet the cables came alive. The room expanded. The room caved in. The room was breathing.
