Daughters released their amazing album “You Won’t Get What You Want” on Ipecac back in November. The album was met with praise from everywhere and was on many best of the year lists for good reason.

This latest video is for “Less Sex” and it’s almost impossible to not make a comparison to Nick Cave in the style of delivery that Alexis Marshall has on this song.  The song itself is dystopian and cathartic surrounded by enclosing wails while standing on quicksand.
You want to move but you won’t.
You want to leave but you’ll stay for one more song.

They’ve been on the road during their hiatus, they accompanied The Dillinger Escape Plan on some of their final shows ever and they’re on the road now.
They will be on a US tour with Black Mass starting February 16th and they will play the Regent Theatre March 2nd.

The Melvins played 2 sold out shows for the Casbah 30th anniversary. As usual the band played an amazing show in San Diego and at the end of their set they closed it by singing Happy Birthday to the venue.

This tour is still in support of their latest release “Pinkus Abortion Technician” out on Ipecac Recordings, which is a reference on the Butthole Surfers album “Locust Abortion Technician” for which Jeff Pinkus was a part of.

As usual, if the Melvins come play your city you should get a ticket and go see them live. They’ve been doing this for 35 years and one day they’ll stop, just hopefully not soon enough.

Sharon Van Etten will be releasing a new album “Remind Me Tomorrow”, her follow up to the incredible “Are We There”, on JagJaguwar 1/18.

Ahead of the album release Van Etten has released a video for the amazing single “Seventeen”. This song is a letter to her 17 year old self in New York. The video perfectly captures herself now and herself 20 years ago.

It’s somewhat weird trying to sing accolades to Sharon Van Etten without hyping her or her upcoming album too much, but from what we’ve heard on the previous singles she’s released we should be expecting another masterful album, just like “Are We There” was. At this point there is no denying that her voice and songwriting are unique and that this a contender for one of the best albums from 2019.

To make matters even better she will be touring this album and she will be performing in San Diego at the Observatory in North Park with Nilüfer Yanya on February 28th.

Kristina Esfandiari is Miserable. She is also know as the vocalist from King Woman which is just a wonderful and brutal doom band. Sargent House released her album “Loverboy / Dog Days”, which is a new EP (Loverboy) and a her 2015 EP (Dog Days).
This is what dream doom pop sounds like, and it’s something that should be in your rotation. It takes you places and it makes you feel, which is something we are in need in these days.

Miserable has released a couple of videos for her release and in the you can tell / feel that Kristina’s voice IS another power instrument to match her music.

Here’s the audio video for “Gasoline”, another standout track from the double EP album.

The one thing to differentiate King Woman from Miserable is that one leans on doom drone metal and the latter on doom dream shoegaze pop, and she does both wonderfully. Both genres sound new and refreshing with her voice and work. Both genres need more of Kristina Esfandiari, hell the music world (and the live presentations) need more of her.
This double EP album goes to prove that she’s only in competition with herself to top one release over the next.
Do not sleep on any of her releases.

FEMME released a new EP titled 2.0. Laura Bettinson is FEMME and with this EP she has continued creating a vibrant blend of elctro pop that still continues to carry the dna that she inputted on her Ultraista album. Here her sound is more than dance, more than club music. It’s an amalgamation of great songwriting and production.

Off of this EP, out on AntiFragile Music, 2 singles have been released.
The incredibly contagious “All For You”, which is what a pop anthem should sound like.

The other single is the impeccable “Be Shy” featuring NOVA. And taking a more hands on approach she also directed and edited this video.

FEMME is carving her way in the scene having complete artistry control over her production, writing, fashion, videos, visuals, ideas. Everything. The only artist that come to mind that might be on the same playing field as her are Grimes and Zola Jesus.
FEMME is fierce.

Michael Stipe is a sort of musical hero to me. His voice was of major help during those dreaded junior high school days. His songs became more than anthems to me. I understood what a musician and a band could mean to you at a certain crucial time for a young teenager.

Upon diving into their influences and what inspired them to be them I found out that his main inspiration was Patti Smith. She was his north star. She was an influence and an inspiration and a way through. He himself became an inspiration to Thom Yorke during the dreaded OK Computer tour.

Michael Stipe’s lyrics and music and voice and persona was/is still an inspiration and a musical hero. His portrait is hanging in the wall of my mind the same way that Adam in Only Lovers Left Alive, d. Jim Jarmusch, has a wall of all his heroes.

Georgia Anne Muldrow released her latest album “OVERLOAD” October 26th on the Brainfeeder label.

To listen to Georgia is to go on a soul jazz trip. Even if you think you’re prepared for the voyage it will still take you somewhere unexpected. Yes her voice is amazing, but so is the production and the arrangements here

And that cover art is just perfect. Timeless. Truly one that can even become iconic.

Georgia Anne Muldrow has worked and collaborated with an array of producers from Madlib, Stones Throw, Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Dudley Perkins plus she’s the co-founder of SomeOthaShip Connect label.

This is her 17th album released since 2006. And it doesn’t appear to be stopping anytime soon. Here’s to hoping she keeps reinventing herself and her sound and R&B all together.

JR Slayer is the moniker for Cody Votolato latest project, he is of course the guitarist for Jaguar Love, The Blood Brothers & Head Wound City.

So far, these songs here are great pop songs. Light pop songs that deliver as much as any of his previous post-hardcore guitar work did. This feels like a new chapter In Cody’s musical career. His sound now is more on the genuine feel of longing and connection, of joy and bewilderment.

For this step forward, Cody says, “JR Slayer is just a place where I’m able to navigate all the different things I’ve naturally started doing over the past few years, be it songwriting, solo albums, remixes or producing.”
